What's in the works for 2010?
A box set of 60 remixed / remastered recordings that span 10 years.
What do you mean exactly?
Some tracks we went and rebuilt a few stems. Some of the others received compression or saturation treatments. A few changes to the balance of the mix, a little rearranging.
How do you accomplish that?
We like to look at electronic music as mastering from the ground up because we're setting tones. You should know how they're going to interfere before you begin composing. We learned these tricks early which is why we feel these recordings still stand up.
Is everything going smooth?
No, it’s bumpy. This is why it takes so long to get a record out-- and that's not even considering the filtering process. My buddy once told me to record as much as I can to get the idea down. Then when you know how to release it, just choose the best.
Any other issues you run into ?
Um, random algorithms. It's hard to rerender something and not get that same tone that was generated during a bounce. It's almost like a live take. Who says computer music is contrived?
Anything new you're working on?
There's going to be a new record coming in 2011.
Where do you think music is headed?
Towards a blend of electronic and hip-hop. Since laptops and tiny earbuds have been the most popular medium of music, I think the best overcompressed sounds are from synths. Hip-hop has the most talented lyricists and tightest low end.
How is the audio industry doing, overall?
Getting stronger. People forgot about music after HD TVs started hypnotizing people but since television standards have declined and commericals have become invasive, people have been switching back to music and enjoying themselves again.
Tell me a secret.
The loudness war is an arms race and we got the biggest weapon.
